(TITC) – The first Congress of the Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee for the 2025-2030 term has identified ecological agriculture as a strategic foundation for sustainable development, aiming to build modern rural areas that are green, resilient, and rich in local cultural values. This initiative marks a major vision, opening a new chapter for the “New Dong Thap” journey over the coming decade.
Sa Dec Flower Village – a famous tourist destination of Dong Thap
According to the resolution, by 2030 Dong Thap aims to become a province with rapidly developing industry, a pioneer in ecological agriculture, modern rural areas, and a community of progressive farmers, ranking among the leading localities in the Mekong Delta. By 2045, the province envisions establishing itself as a centre of modern agriculture and eco-tourism in the region, while also taking national leadership in select agricultural and advanced industrial sectors.
To achieve these goals, Dong Thap is focusing on restructuring its agricultural sector along value chains of key commodities such as rice, lotus, mangoes, ornamental flowers, and pangasius. These traditional products carry deep local cultural identity and hold significant potential for agro-tourism development. Innovative models combining crop cultivation, aquaculture, and experiential tourism are emerging, transforming agriculture into a multi-value economy that integrates ecology and community culture.
Simultaneously, Dong Thap is accelerating digital transformation in agriculture. Advanced technologies including sensors, the Internet of Things (IoT), and big data management are being deployed to monitor soil, water resources, crop growth, and livestock, while ensuring traceability. These innovations reduce production costs, enhance product quality, meet increasingly sophisticated market demands, and represent an important step towards smart agriculture.

In the long-term vision, the province has issued plans for agriculture and forestry development for 2021-2030, with a perspective to 2050, prioritizing ecological agricultural models. Resolution 44/NQ-HDND of 2025 sets out the development of specialized cultivation areas based on ecological advantages, promoting circular and green economy practices, low-emission agriculture, and digitalization across the sector.
Dong Thap also capitalizes on its natural and agricultural resources to boost eco-tourism. Numerous experiential tourism models are being widely implemented, including lotus farming, “farmer for a day” programs, fruit harvesting, and exploring rural life through terraced fields, lotus ponds, and fruit-laden gardens. These activities generate additional income for locals while effectively promoting the province’s distinctive OCOP products to both domestic and international visitors.
In the new term, the province has identified five breakthrough tasks, focusing on the development of transportation infrastructure, agriculture, human resources, and science and technology. These pillars are essential to executing the green economic strategy, attracting investment, expanding eco-tourism, and enhancing the competitiveness of Dong Thap’s agriculture.
With well-structured strategies and a long-term vision, ecological agriculture is more than a slogan, it has become the driving force for sustainable socio-economic development in Dong Thap. The province is steadily realizing the aspiration of “New Dong Thap”, a modern, green, culturally rich, and vibrant rural region.
