The Unique Cloud-Hunting Festival on the Grasslands of Quang Ngai

(TITC) – On the evening of 9 August, at the Bui Hui grasslands in Dang Thuy Tram commune, Quang Ngai province, the event “Night of the Grasslands – Touching the Clouds” took place. This marked the very first time the locality organized a “cloud-hunting” festival that combined music, cultural experiences, and nature, with the aim of promoting the destination and stimulating tourism demand.

The festival featured a wide range of activities: exhibitions and sales of local specialties, handicrafts, and OCOP products; food stalls offering mountain-inspired snacks; and a cultural space showcasing the traditions of the Hrê ethnic people. Visitors could participate in camping, enjoy a bonfire, listen to gong music, join in múa sạp (bamboo dance), and experience folk singing styles such as ta lêu and ka choi.

By blending cultural heritage with natural beauty, the event was designed to create a unique attraction that enhances visitor spending and enriches the overall tourism experience. More than just an entertainment program, the festival served as a bridge for community connection, nurturing local pride while contributing to the growth of the cultural industries. In this way, Dang Thuy Tram commune is positioning itself as a destination that is modern and attractive yet firmly rooted in tradition.

Music in the clouds

A highlight of the festival was a professional music concert featuring ballad and acoustic performances under the theme “Love.” The stage was set amidst the vast expanse of the grasslands, where drifting clouds floated gently past, embracing the audience in nature’s arms. Soft, emotional melodies blended with the sound of the wind, the scent of grass, and the cool mountain air, creating the impression that music and nature were in perfect harmony, enveloping listeners in a uniquely immersive experience.

Bui Hui – the “grassland above the clouds”

Located nearly 700 meters above sea level, Bui Hui grassland is home to rolling hills often blanketed in seas of white clouds, with endless stretches of green meadows reaching toward the horizon. This setting has earned it the nickname “the grassland above the clouds” in central Vietnam. The crisp air and open landscape make it an ideal spot for cloud-hunting, a popular activity among young travelers, photographers, and those seeking peace and relaxation in nature.

Until now, Bui Hui has mainly attracted small groups or individual travelers. With the introduction of the “Touching the Clouds” festival, the local government aims to establish a large-scale tourism product that combines scenery, music, and culture. The goal is to extend visitor stays, increase spending, and further promote Quang Ngai as a dynamic destination for experiential tourism.

A step toward sustainable tourism development

Events like this also highlight the untapped potential of Quang Ngai’s highlands. By celebrating the beauty of its landscapes while honoring the cultural identity of the Hrê people, the festival not only diversifies local tourism products but also lays the foundation for long-term sustainable development. Importantly, it encourages collaboration between authorities, local communities, and businesses to create distinctive tourism experiences that bring economic benefits while safeguarding natural and cultural heritage.

A new signature event for Quang Ngai

With its blend of nature, culture, and creativity, the Bui Hui cloud-hunting festival has the potential to become a signature event for Quang Ngai province. For visitors, it offers more than just spectacular views – it is an opportunity to immerse themselves in music under the stars, experience local traditions, and feel the rare joy of “touching the clouds.”

In the years ahead, the festival is expected to draw increasing numbers of domestic and international tourists, positioning Bui Hui as one of central Vietnam’s most unique eco-cultural destinations.
