Bac Giang province: Son Dong highland district develops typical OCOP products

Son Dong district (Bac Giang province) is accompanying producers for at least 20 One Commune One Product (OCOP) products rated 3 stars or higher bearing the characteristics of a highland region by the end of this year.

In November 2021, the Son Dong forest honey of the Son Dong Organic Honey Bee Cooperative got 3-star OCOP status. Nguyen Duc Minh, head of the cooperative, said that after being rated, the sale of the product has become more favourable, and it has been known to many customers inside and outside the province.

The cooperative has more than 5,500 domestic bee colonies, raised in forests in Tuan Dao, Yen Dinh and An Ba communes and Tay Yen Tu town, providing an average of 70-75 tonnes of honey to the market each year.

Organically raised bees provide honey with stable quality, deliciousness and high prices. To date, the cooperative’s honey has been sold at many agents and modern medicine stores in Hanoi, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Bac Giang, Bac Ninh and Khanh Hoa, thus creating more jobs and income, and improving living standards for over 40 cooperative members.

The Son Dong Organic Honey Bee Cooperative was established in 2014 with 29 members, which now reaches 44. The average income of each member is 3-5 million VND per month, with some earning 10 million VND (393 USD) per month.

According to the district Division of Agriculture and Rural Development, producers are increasingly interested in the OCOP programme with the number of products registered for classification increasing each year. At present, the district has 18 products recognised as 3-star OCOP items in such industries as alcoholic beverages, fresh food, and processed food.

When agricultural products are given “stars”, people’s thinking about goods production has changed significantly. Producers have strengthened linkages to create stable supply for both favourable sale and higher prices.

Producers promote and introduce OCOP products of Son Dong district, Bac Giang city.

For example, the 3-star OCOP green lim mushroom product of the Son Dong Green Lim Mushroom Cooperative in Cam Dan commune brings high income to members and affiliated farmers. Currently the average selling price ranges from 700,000-950,000 VND per kg.

Sticking to the goals of the OCOP programme, in recent times, Son Dong district has issued resolutions and plans to encourage stakeholders to tap the potential of local land and traditional products, improve product value and increase income, contributing to improving the lives of people in rural areas.

Over the past three years, the locality has provided nearly 1.8 billion VND (70,800 USD) for them to complete the production, processing, and design innovation processes for their products.
