Opening ceremony of the Ca Mau Shrimp Festival and the Mekong Delta OCOP product connection forum in 2023

On the evening of December 10, 2023, the People’s Committee of Ca Mau province coordinated with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to open the Ca Mau Shrimp Festival and the Mekong Delta OCOP Product Connection Forum 2023, with the theme “Festival Ca Mau shrimp – Proud of Vietnamese brand”. Attending the ceremony were the Secretary of the Communist Party’s Central Committee, Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai; leaders, former leaders of the Party, State, and Vietnam Fatherland Front; leaders of central ministries, departments and branches; leaders of some provinces and cities in the country; international delegations, along with a large number of people and tourists inside and outside the province. On the side of Ca Mau province, there were Nguyen Tien Hai, Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Council; Huynh Quoc Viet, Alternate member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee; Pham Thanh Ngai, Permanent Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee; leaders, members of the Provincial Party Standing Committee; former provincial leaders through the periods; representatives of leaders of provincial departments, branches and branches attended.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Huynh Quoc Viet, Alternate Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee, emphasized: Ca Mau Shrimp Festival and OCOP Product Connection Forum in the Mekong Delta 2023 (Shrimp Festival) will take place in Ca Mau city and some localities in the province, from December 10 – 13, 2023. This is a meaningful cultural, economic, and tourism event, an affirmation and honor of shrimp farmers who are attached to nature and ecology, imbued with traditional culture; honor those who have contributed to the application of science and technology, contributing to the production of many shrimp products with high quality and added value; honor those who have contributed to bringing Ca Mau shrimp products to consumers around the world and also respectfully express our gratitude to consumers who have trusted the quality of Ca Mau shrimp products.

Huynh Quoc Viet, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of Ca Mau Provincial People’s Committee, wishes and commits to creating conditions for investors to have the opportunity to survey, learn, research, participate, and develop production and business in Ca Mau province. Thereby, contributing to bring the Ca Mau shrimp brand and many potential products of Ca Mau and provinces in the Mekong Delta region to the world, participating in global value chains.

​The Shrimp Festival series of events is also an opportunity for Ca Mau to introduce and promote the values of the seafood industry and famous products and specialties of Ca Mau localities that have become extremely unique OCOP products, carrying many indigenous cultural values that have followed the people who went to explore the land of Ca Mau; the event also introduced key OCOP products from localities in the Mekong Delta region and a number of provinces and cities nationwide. This is a “bonding event” of Ca Mau shrimp and many specialty products created during the creative labor of people in villages in the Mekong Delta and the whole country; is the desire for integration of localities, and the commitment of the Party Committee, Government and People of Ca Mau province on agricultural production “Green environment – Clean quality”.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Secretary of the Communist Party’s Central Committee, Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai emphasized: With the efforts of the entire Party, the entire army and the entire people, in 2023 GRDP in Ca Mau province will increase by 7.83% over the same period, higher than the national average. Our country’s agricultural, forestry and fishery export turnover reached more than $53 billion. Of which, shrimp exports are about $3.6 billion, Vietnam has become the second largest shrimp supplier in the world, exporting to about 100 countries. Particularly, Ca Mau province has contributed about $01 billion in shrimp export, accounting for 28% of the country and maintained at $01 billion in the last 3 years. Ca Mau shrimp industry has affirmed its position in the world market, exporting to more than 60 countries and territories. In addition to super-intensive farming, there are other types of sustainable farming that are rarely found anywhere else, such as shrimp-forest, shrimp-rice that meet ecological and organic standards.

In addition, the One Commune One Product (OCOP) program has been officially implemented nationwide since 2018 with a focus on developing agricultural and non-agricultural products and services have advantages in each locality along the value chain, with high competitiveness in domestic and international markets. Now, the country has nearly 9,500 OCOP products achieving 3 stars or higher. In parcular, the Mekong Delta has over 1,300 products. OCOP products have quickly affirmed their position and been very positively received by the market, helping farmers to expand production scale, increase product value, thereby improving material and spiritual life.

To develop agriculture effectively and add value, the agricultural sector in general and Ca Mau in particular need to focus on developing the agricultural ecosystem. In which, there is the shrimp industry ecosystem; building a green economy and circular economy in agriculture, contributing to environmental protection and reducing greenhouse gas emissions; encourage startups, innovation and promote digital transformation in agriculture, diversify export markets, etc. This is an appropriate strategic orientation to promote the potential, strengths, outstanding opportunities, and distinct competitive advantages of Ca Mau province and the Mekong Delta region.

The Secretary of the Communist Party’s Central Committee, Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai expressed his hope that the Ca Mau Shrimp Festival event and the Mekong Delta OCOP Product Connection Forum in 2023, it will strongly promote the image and brand of Ca Mau shrimp and local OCOP products to domestic and foreign tourists, contributing to the development of industries; create conditions for businesses to meet, exchange, introduce products and cooperate.

In the opening program of the Shrimp Festival, special art performances took place in the form of theater, bringing viewers to the story of Dat Mui Ca Mau, to better understand the converging alluvial land, where the essence of heaven and earth, with the determination of people, is constantly creating a new face rich in vitality, to turn Ca Mau into a growth pole of the rich Mekong Delta region.
