Wicker is a long-standing traditional profession of ethnic minorities in the Annamite Range. The preservation and promotion of wicker for tourism development help these ethnic minorities better their lives.
According to Y Del ChiĂȘl (76 years old), living in Anonh village of A Nong commune (Tay Giang district) and spending over 50 years making wicker furniture, wicker is the Co Tu peopleâs traditional craft, showing their sophistication, patience, and enthusiasm.
Besides being used in human daily activities, wicker products may be used as souvenirs. For Y Del ChiĂȘl, wicker is not only a passion but also a job that helps his family earn more income.
Another person with a passion for wicker is Alang Cong from Tur hamlet in Dang commune (Tay Giang). He is usually invited to traditional craft festivals or wicker performances. It often takes him from 5 to 7 days, or even 15 days, to finish a wicker product.

Recently, he has taken part in some training courses in order to give younger people instructions for wicker. He hopes that the Co Tu traditional craft of wicker will be preserved because it is a cultural characteristic of Co Tu ethnic minorities.
Materials for wicker are rattan or bamboo. To make beautiful and strong wicker products, it depends on the selection of materials and skilful hands.
So Alang Cong is always concerned about wicker training programmes to younger generations in order to preserve the traditional craft.
Wicker products by Co Tu people are popular with consumers and visitors. So, wicker helps them earn more income.

The conservation and restoration of Co Tu cultural values have received a lot of attention from Tay Giang authorities. So the district will continue to support Co Tu ethnic minorities to preserve and develop traditional wicker and brocade weaving.
According to Arat Blui, Deputy Chairman of the Tay Giang Peopleâs Committee, the district will focus on agricultural extension and developing traditional crafts in the time to come.
At the same time, Tay Giang will help to raise ethnic minoritiesâ awareness of traditional craft conservation for a better life.
