Getting into new crop
Orange and pomelo in Luc Ngan district is harvested from late September to the end of next February. This year the district has over 4,200 hectares of citrus tree growing area with an expected productivity of 40,000 tonnes including over 2,300 hectares of the growing area following VietGAP procedures with an expected output of 25,600 tonnes. Phuong Son, Hong Giang, Thanh Hai, Quy Son, Tru Huu, Tan Quang and Tan Moc are the communes with large orange and pomelo output.

According to the district Division of Agriculture and Rural Development, they have concentrated on supervising and directing production since early this year to ensure the product quality to meet the standards of different markets. The products have been smoothly consumed right at the beginning of the season.
Thanh Hai Agricultural production and Tourism Cooperative in Xe Cu village, Thanh Hai commune plants more than 10 hectares of organic green-skin pomelo, sweet pomelo, yellow-flesh and sweet oranges. The Cooperative earned a profit of some 3 billion VND (121,600 USD) last year after deducting the expenses and its profit is expected to increase this year.
In line with selling their farm products, the Cooperative pays special attention to developing garden experiencing tourism. In order to better this service, the Cooperative has cleaned the hilly gardens, planted more flowers, arranged seats, cooking places, tea corner and accommodation to meet the demands of tourists.
Similarly, the family of Ma Van Tien in Bom village, Tan Moc commune plants more than 1 hectare of orange which is expected to gain about 10,000 tonnes of fruit. This is among 20 other gardens selected by the district to serve tourists.
Currently, pomelo and orange products of Luc Ngan district are mainly sold to some northern localities including Hanoi, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Nam Dinh, Bac Ninh and a number of southern localities. Besides, the products have been exported to Russia and some European countries.
Smooth consumption
In order to promote consumption of orange and pomelo associated to tourism development, Luc Ngan district has urged its competent agencies, communes and towns to embellish the recognized tourism sites while boosting communication to local people to strictly comply with the food hygiene and safety requirements and standards.
The district has 3 pomelo planting area codes to export to the US (30 hectares) and the pomelo growing area to export to Russia (over 164 hectares). There are various types products such as Suu pomelo, sweet pomelo, green-skin pomelo, yellow-flesh orange, sweet orange, V2 orange and cara orange. |
According to Nguyen Van Manh, Vice Chairman of the people’s committee of Luc Ngan district, the quality of orange and pomelo in the district is dramatically improved. The district has more than 10 hectares of organic orange and pomelo. Luc Ngan orange is expected to be granted geographical indication by the end this year.
Luc Ngan district plans organize a conference on promoting consumption of farm produce and launching the tourism programme “Luc Ngan in autumn -winter 2023” with a hive of activities. The district will invite some famous singers and hot streamers to promote the local farm and tourism products.
The district people’s committee has supported in designs and packaging to enhance efficiency in promoting the trademarks. The district also pays attention to supporting farmers, businesses and cooperatives to sell products on some e-commerce platforms such as Sendo, Voso, Tiki, Postmart, dacsanlucngan.vn and some social networks like zalo, facebook and youtube.
“The competent agencies regularly update and follow up the market developments and consumption volume to widely communicate and help the farmers to actively harvest the products. Besides, we publicize the hotlines for local people to report on frauds at the purchasing points”, said Nguyen Van Manh.
