Attach OCOP to tourism
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, promoting sustainable tourism development on the basis of green growth associated with rural tourism development, OCOP products, and indigenous cultural resource values is one of the key tasks of the national target program on building new rural. Therefore, the OCOP Program and the Rural Tourism Development Program on new rural construction in the period 2021–2025 are identified as one of the key solutions and tasks to develop the rural economy associated with new rural construction being implemented and replicated by localities.
Mr Nguyen Duc Thang, Rural Development Department Director, said: “In Phu Yen, the OCOP Program is implemented relatively synchronously, and the whole province currently has 118 recognized OCOP products. OCOP products initially exploited the potential and strengths of local products, raw material areas, and labor, especially tourism services. Localities have seen advantages and opportunities to promote and exploit the value of OCOP products associated with the development of rural tourism services “.
Mr Pham Tho Truong, BB Fram Agricultural and Service Cooperative Director in Son Long commune (Son Hoa district), stated,: “Three products of the cooperative have been recognized by the PPC with 3-star OCOP after a period of efforts”. The cooperative is currently working to develop high-tech agriculture to cultivate fruits and vegetables like strawberries, cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, centella, lettuce, etc. for customers. The cooperative also staged campfire performances and gong dances to demonstrate the cultural diversity of the Van Hoa Plateau’s ethnic minorities. These activities attract a large number of visitors from neighboring provinces such as Binh Dinh, Gia Lai, and Dak Lak.
Awakening tourism potentials
Comrade Pham Thanh Tung, Deputy Director of the Institute of Agricultural Tourism Economics, has recently conducted field surveys at some locations in the province with potentials for developing rural tourism and community-based tourism. He evaluated: Phu Yen has many OCOP products with typical characteristics of each locality. In the future, linking the production of these OCOP products with tourism activities such as connecting with existing provincial routes and tours will contribute to improving the value of these products.
Comrade Dang Thi Thuy, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Deputy Director, said,: “Implementing Decision 922 of the Prime Minister approving the Rural Tourism Development Program in new rural construction in the period 2021-2025, the PPC has issued a plan to implement this program. According to the plan, the province as a whole will have 41 registration models with the shared objective of promoting the growth of rural tourism associated with promoting the potential and advantages of agriculture, craft villages, traditional culture, landscape, and ecological environment of localities, creating unique tourism products of the province, in order to improve the quality of material and spiritual life of rural people, and contributing to rural economic restructuring”.
According to comrade Dang Thi Thuy, in order to awaken the potentials of developing tourist destinations and rural tourism products associated with new rural construction, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has been continuing to organize surveys and collect information and data on resources and rural tourism markets in the province to analyze and evaluate the current situation and potential of agricultural and rural tourism in the localities. Simultaneously, training courses on professional skills, vocational skills, soft skills, and tourism knowledge are organized for organizations, individuals, and communities participating in agricultural and rural tourism activities.
