Exploring Can Gio’s Rung Sac – From a Land of Heroic Memory to a Future Green Destination

(TITC) – Located at the southeastern gateway of Ho Chi Minh City, the Rung Sac mangrove forest in Can Gio is considered the city’s precious “green lung.” Encompassing more than 75,000 hectares of wetlands, the area is home to hundreds of endemic plant and animal species and plays a vital role in regulating the climate and mitigating the impacts of sea-level rise. Recognised by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve since 2000, Rung Sac is being shaped into a signature green tourism destination, harmonising nature-based experiences with environmental conservation in line with global sustainable tourism trends.

Beyond its ecological significance, Rung Sac is also a land deeply marked by heroic history. During the fiercest years of the resistance war against the United States, this rugged mangrove wilderness served as the operational base of the Rung Sac Special Task Force. With its dense foliage, intricate waterways and complex natural conditions, the forest acted both as a protective shield and a natural trench for the commandos to launch daring missions that struck fear into the enemy. Many pivotal operations, such as attacks on enemy vessels, the raid on the Nha Be fuel depot and the destruction of critical logistic facilities, were carried out from this very forest, contributing greatly to the eventual victory. The young but extraordinarily courageous commandos endured mosquitoes, mud, hunger and harsh conditions to achieve remarkable feats that remain etched in national memory. Today, the Rung Sac Base Relic stands as a site where visitors can learn about the bravery and sacrifice of these wartime heroes.

Alongside its historical depth, Rung Sac offers a unique ecological experience. The vast green expanse of mangrove forests lining the waterways creates an atmosphere of tranquillity rarely found so close to an urban centre. Boat trips winding through the forest allow visitors to observe the thriving mangrove ecosystem and understand how mangroves serve as natural buffers against storms, tidal surges and saline intrusion. At conservation zones such as the bat swamp, bird grounds and long-tailed macaque habitat, visitors are guided to keep a safe distance to avoid disturbing wildlife. All activities follow strict environmental regulations to preserve the pristine landscape and ecological balance of the biosphere reserve.

Can Gio is also promoting community-based tourism, encouraging local residents to participate in eco-friendly services such as homestays, boat tours, culinary experiences and the production of mangrove-area specialities. Visitors can enjoy seasonal fresh seafood or explore traditional livelihoods like salt production and ecological aquaculture. Integrating tourism with conservation helps raise awareness among residents, ensuring that natural resources are used responsibly and sustainably.

The long-term orientation for green tourism development in Rung Sac aims to create distinctive tourism products that respect nature while fostering environmental awareness. The city is implementing measures such as controlling daily visitor numbers, developing eco-friendly transport, investing in infrastructure without disrupting the mangrove structure and expanding environmental education activities for students. Themed tours exploring the history of the Rung Sac Special Task Force are also incorporated into itineraries, allowing visitors not only to experience nature but also to discover stories of courage tied to this unique mangrove battlefield.

With its remarkable landscape, exceptional ecological role and profound historical value, Can Gio’s Rung Sac is emerging as a flagship green destination of Ho Chi Minh City. Visitors can immerse themselves in its refreshing natural environment, learn about the heroic achievements of past generations and gain a deeper understanding of the shared responsibility to protect the mangrove forests, an invaluable resource for today and the future.
