Guided tours came into operation at Kim Bong carpentry village in Cam Kim (Hoi An, Quang Nam) on June 1, 2024.

Guided tour activities at Kim Bong carpentry village take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Visitors can choose to travel by river or by road to the village centre to learn about the history and culture of Kim Bong carpentry village.

They can visit the traditional craft village exhibition house, boat building and repair facilities, woodcraft production sites, and the Cam Kim market.

Visitors can watch traditional crafts performances and participate in activities such as wood carving, mat weaving, wicker baskets and coracle making. In particular, every tour-ticket buyer can get a keepsake crafted by Kim Bong craftspeople.

The goal of the guided tour programme is to raise awareness of the traditional Kim Bong carpentry village’s historical and cultural significance, transform it into a tourist attraction that can satisfy the varied needs of visitors, and help the locals’ standard of living.

Recently, the Hoi An administration approved a few projects in Cam Kim related to the development of craft villages and tourism.

They include building the eco-craft villages in the period of 2021-2025, the restoration and development of tourism at Kim Bong carpentry village, and the development of community-based tourism associated with indigenous cultural preservation and natural ecosystem conservation.

Additionally, Hoi An has increased investment in infrastructure, service development, and landscape renovation. The locality has also provided vocational training courses for local residents, encouraged start-up models, and organised cultural activities, events, and festivals.

Particularly in its application for the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, Hoi An proposed the initiative related to the project ‘Kim Bong Carpentry – Igniting Creativity,’ which focuses on further developing the traditional Kim Bong carpentry village, with the craft recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage.

With an emphasis on technical training, support for creative design, consulting for start-ups, and a goal to transform Kim Bong carpentry village into one of the city’s hubs for interchange and creativity, the project is anticipated to construct a pilot model of a community-based tourism village.
