Ca Mau – To diversify its OCOP products from shrimp

Ca Mau has many advantages for development of fisheries, especially farmed shrimp. To diversify the products as well as enhance the value of Ca Mau shrimp, many households, businesses, and collective economic organizations in the province have created and developed OCOP products. It contributes to affirm the position, value and role of Ca Mau shrimp in the development of the province’ specialty and typical products.

Tai Thinh Phat Cooperative’s ecological dried shrimp products had recognized with 3 stars OCOP product at the provincial level

Up to now, Ca Mau province has 137 OCOP products. Of these, 53 products of 22 entities are made from shrimp, accounting for 39%. OCOP products are made from shrimp in the province such as: Dried shrimp, prawn cracker, shrimp floss, grilled shrimp, roasted shrimp, sour shrimp paste, pressed dried shrimp, etc., with the typical flavor of Ca Mau shrimp. OCOP products from shrimp have aroused the potential and strengths of the province’s shrimp raw materials and products. It is considered suitable for tastes, meets consumer needs, and shows strong local characteristics and traditions.

With the desire to enhance value and develop a variety of products from the abundant and quality raw material resources of Nam Can region, Ca Mau province, Ms. Mai Thi Thuy Trang, Director of Tai Thinh Phat Farm Cooperative, in Lung Duoc hamlet, Tam Giang commune, Nam Can district, has processed many products from shrimp and received 3-star OCOP certification. With products including ecological shrimp patties, shrimp floss, ecological dried shrimp, etc. The cooperative is increasingly improving product quality, as well as gradually expanding the market, contributing to improving the quality of shrimp. Ms. Mai Thi Thuy Trang shared: “The organic shrimp source here has a unique flavor, so I want to promote and introduce this flavor to a large number of consumers. Participating in the OCOP program helps shrimp products be more affirmed in quality. In addition, it also helps create jobs for many idle workers in rural areas”.

In recent times, the development of OCOP products has contributed to the transformation from small-scale agricultural production to production towards value chain links, meeting increasingly strict standards and requirements of the market and consumers. Ms. Do Hong Hoa, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Hong Hoa Aquaculture Cooperative, said: “In my opinion, Ca Mau shrimp has a unique, delicious flavor so it can be processed into many diverse dishes. Currently, our facility has 5 shrimp products such as: Shrimp crackers, dried shrimp, shrimp patties, pressed shrimp, shrimp paste. Among them, the shrimp chip product was recognized as a 3-star OCOP product at the provincial level. Shrimp products of Hong Hoa Cooperative are popular with many consumers and are consumed in major provinces and cities across the country, especially the Northern provinces. In the near future, we will improve the quality of recognized products. At the same time, continue to research and develop other shrimp products, moving towards recognition of OCOP products, contributing to enriching the province’s products”.

Ca Mau shrimp can be processed into many products to serve consumer needs

Ms. Truong Ngoc Giau, Director of Ngoc Giau Seafood Production and Trading Company Limited, living in Tan Thanh hamlet, Tan Tien commune, Dam Doi district, said: “Recognizing the potential for raw shrimp sources in the locality is very rich and abundant, so I think it is necessary to develop this source of raw materials into ready-made products to serve consumer needs. So, the products made from shrimp were born. Up to now, about 10 products processed from the Company’s shrimp have reached consumers. Among them, there are 2 products that meet OCOP 3-star certification standards and will be upgraded to 4-star in the near future.

Recently, sectors, levels and entities in the province are making efforts to upgrade OCOP products, with practical work such as investing in equipment to serve the production process, improving quality, Improving packaging and designs, aiming to promote, develop and expand consumer markets, etc. Currently, the province’s OCOP products have been included in distribution systems inside and outside the province such as: linking and distributing to Trade Centers – supermarkets – stores; connected on e-commerce trading floors such as: madeincamau.com, Viettel (voso.vn), (Postmart) and other channels Lazada mall, Amazon, Alibaba; zalo, facebook, etc. Some entities produce and process for other businesses for export or sell products to other businesses for export or sell directly to foreign consumers through the following channels: Lazada mall, Amazon, Alibaba, zalo, facebook,etc. through markets: USA, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan, etc. That shows that Ca Mau OCOP products in general, and shrimp OCOP products in particular, have a fairly stable position in the market. addition to the current export of raw shrimp, developing and continuously improving the quality of OCOP products will be an important step to create momentum for Ca Mau shrimp to continue to improve value and advance further in the domestic and world markets.
