Precious local medicinal herbs

Reportedly, Quang Nam has built 4 reserves for precious medicinal herbs covering an area of 25 hectares in Nam Tra My, Tay Giang, and Dong Giang districts.

They provide seedlings for local residents, especially ethnic minorities, to create livelihoods and stabilise their lives.

According to the overall project on socio-economic development in ethnic minorities and mountainous areas in the period 2021 – 2030, a model for growing medicinal herbs and plants, including Campanumoea javanica (CJ) and Morinda officinalis How (MO), has been developed in Tay Giang district.

CJ is now planting and growing well in two communes, Ga Ry and Ch’Om. Ch’Om Agricultural Services Cooperative supports product consumption.

Meanwhile, MO is being developed in Dong Giang district. There are now about 26,000 seedlings planted under the forest canopy.

At the same time, production cooperation groups have been formed from households planting MO so that they take part in the preservation of MO and the development of medicinal herb areas.

Besides, ethnic minorities are provided with knowledge and techniques for growing medicinal herbs under the forest canopy, such as building nursery gardens, seedling care, planting and looking after seedlings, and MO preliminary processing.

Development of medicinal herbs

Quang Nam has many policies, mechanisms, and plans to preserve and develop precious local medicinal herbs. Accordingly, there are now approximately 2,500 hectares of medicinal herbs. It is planned to get over 61,000 hectares of medicinal herbs by 2030.

Concurrently, several models specialising in vegetables, flowers, precious medicinal herbs, and short-term industrial plants have also been set up in order to provide safe and clean products to the market, link agricultural production with tourism development, and protect the eco-environment, thereby contributing to local socio-economic growth.

Currently, there are some products made of/from medicinal herbs in Quang Nam that are popular with consumers, such as CJ extract, CJ jam, CJ soaked in honey, CJ tea bags, and MO wine.
